This Solid Brioche Knit Cowl Has Coziness Covered

Two-color brioche often grabs the spotlight, but we’re big fans of the one-color versions, too. This solid cowl is super simple, and will teach you how to knit brioche in the round (it’s pretty similar to one-color brioche knit flat).

You can use this basic pattern to play with different yarn weights, different numbers of stitches (just stick with even numbers), and numbers of rounds. As written, this cowl is over sized — think maximum coziness.

Instructions

Cast on 108 sts.

Pro Tip: Use a stretchy cast-on here, like the German twisted cast-on.

Place your stitch marker, and join to work in the round.

Setup rnd: *K1, wyf sl1yo; repeat from * around.

Here’s what this means: go ahead and knit your first stitch. Then bring your yarn under your right needle to the front of the work, and slip your next stitch purlwise. Bring the yarn back up over your right needle, crossing over the stitch you just slipped, and knit the next stitch. This creates the yarnover. Bring the yarn to the front again, and slip the next stitch purlwise. Keep repeating these two actions all the way around.

Rnd 1: *Wyf sl1yo, brk; rep from * around.

Bring the yarn to the front of the work, slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring the yarn over the needle and across the slipped stitch to the back of the needle. Knit the next stitch with its YO (brk). Repeat from * around.

Rnd 2: *Brp, sl1yof; rep from * around.

Purl the first stitch and its YO (a brp), leave the working yarn in front, slip the next stitch purl-wise, then bring the yarn over and across the stitch, then back to the front, ready for the next brp.

Continue working Rnds 1 and 2 until the cowl measures about 12 inches.

Good to Know: When you work your first couple rows, your scarf may not look very…brioche. Hang in there! It takes a few rows for the pattern to develop.
