9 Coats to Sew for Your Most Stylish Winter Yet

Winter usually means a colder climate, so it’s time to break out the warm sweaters, scarfs, hats and — obviously — coats! You might think sewing your own coat is a dream you’ll never realize, but these coat sewing patterns are not that hard to put together.

1. Pea Coat

Choose this double-breasted coat sewing pattern if you like the look of a well-fitted coat with tons of options. The pattern includes three length alternatives: high hip for a trendy casual look, just below the hip or at the upper thigh. Fitted at the waist, this coat still has enough room for a thin layer of clothing underneath. Facings and a full lining keep this pattern fairly simple to construct, but with a very professional finish.

2. Amsterdam All-Weather Coat

A fully lined, all-weather women’s coat, full of gorgeous options to help you customize it to your taste. This jacket can be made in a lightweight woven fabric for a mid-season garment, a waterproof fabric as a raincoat, or of course wool. A kids’ version is available too — get them in a bundle to save.

3. Coat 4248

This short coat has a ’60s vibe, with the stand-up boatneck collar with a huge bow and a practical, cute inverted pleat at the center back yoke. I can see it in plain black wool for an evergreen staple, but also in denim, with a floral silk lining that pops out when you open it.

4. Faux Fur Coat Pattern

Accordingly with the designer, this one-size pattern can fit a wide range of sizes (S to XL). Fully lined but pretty easy to put together, it can be sewn in a couple of hours. Just remember you’ll need to do some vacuuming right after you sew it (faux fur = a huge mess!)

5. Sophia Swing Coat

This unlined raglan coat is perfect for layering clothes in warmer climates. I love the look of the center one-button closure: It looks like a cardigan but sewn in a woven fabric. A center back pleat increases wearing ease.

6. Leatherette Japanese Coat

This fluid, oversized coat features elegant details, like the leatherette trim on the neckline and pockets. The designer recommends working with double-sided fabrics (woven with two right sides). This looks like the perfect pattern for a beginner — just omit the pockets if you think they’re beyond your skill level (and patience).

7. Long Windy Coat

This double-breasted, streamlined coat is a classic that never goes out of style, with its collar-less jewel neckline, sachet line (without darts) and patch pockets with flaps. To make it fancier, choose a large patterned fabric, or play with plaid alignment.

8. Esplanade Coat

Here’s another easy coat, perfect for introducing beginners to the world of sewing coats. The only intermediate skill you need is sewing buttonholes. The coat’s raglan sleeves are roomy but flattering, the inseam pockets and a regular wing collar give it simple finishing touches. Want to make it warmer? Line it with fleece!

9. Pepernoot Hooded Coat

This is probably my favorite one, the one that looks exactly the way I imagine a perfect coat: It has a hood, a zipper instead of buttons, zippers at the pockets (no more losing my gloves!) and cute, flattering rounded yoke on the front and the back.
