If you love DIYing your own Christmas ornaments, but don’t have a ton of time to go super elaborate, we’ve got the perfect project for you. These pretty paper ornaments would also make sweet embellishments for gift boxes and bags — so they’re pretty AND versatile.

Die Cut House Ornaments

Level: Easy

What You Need

  • Cardstock in a variety of colors
  • Die-cutting machine and/or paper punches
  • Glue pen
  • Craft glue
  • Twine or string
  • Embellishments (glitter glue, printed or stamped sentiments, heat embossing supplies, dimensional paint, enamel dots, etc.)
  • Instructions

    1. Cut and Glue

Die cut or punch several of the same shape out of card stock. We cut five of each shape. You may want to cut more or less, depending on how thick your card stock is and how dimensional you’d like your ornament to be.

Use a glue pen to cover the top of the first die cut or punched shape with glue. Line up a second shape over top of the first and press to secure. You will glue all pieces together, but stop for now after the first two.

    2. Add the String

Once the first two layers are glued together, add a dab of craft glue at the top of the shape. Cut a piece of twine or string about 1″ long and place it on top of the glue. Press the twine down into the glue and hold for several seconds, or until the glue holds the twine firmly in place.

Punch or die cut small hearts from red cardstock. We used a paper punch and punched five, the same number of layers as I die cut for the house.

Glue two of the hearts together using the same method as we used for the house shapes in Step 1. Then place the glued hearts under the piece of twine. Lift the twine and add a dab of craft glue. Press the twine down into the glue and hold for several seconds, or until the glue holds the twine firmly in place.

    3. Finish Gluing and Decorate

Glue the remaining house shape layers on top of the layer with the twine, and glue the remaining heart shape layers on top of the layer with twine. Add whatever embellishments and details you’d like – we added some glitter to the heart.

    4. String It Up

Thread a piece of twine or string through the hole for the hanger and tie the loose ends into a knot. If your shape doesn’t have a hole at the top, you can fold a piece of twine or string in half and glue the folded end to the top of the shape, just as we glued the small piece of twine to the shape in Step 2. Make sure to press down very firmly on that area as you add additional layers, so the twine will stay in place and become firmly adhered to the layers on either side.
