Advanced Quilting: Double Wedding Ring Quilt Patterns

For many quilters, making a double wedding ring quilt is a rite of passage. With its interlocking curves and traditional aesthetic, the advanced quilt pattern creates treasured heirloom quilts. Double wedding ring quilt patterns have been adapted over time with a few variations that make them easier to piece. Some designers like to change the look of the quilt all together, while still maintaining the characteristic interlocking rings.

We’ve rounded up some fabulous double wedding ring quilt patterns.

Does curved piecing scare you to pieces? If you’d like to avoid the curved piecing of double wedding ring quilt patterns and still achieve the same look, Scarlett has designed a beginner-friendly pattern with slanted rectangles that simulate the look of curves. This beautiful, scrappy version of Scarlett’s Double Wedding Ring has a vintage look that honors the traditional pattern and still innovates on the design to make it easier to piece.

Double Wedding Ring Quilt

Designer Laurel, who learned to sew from her mom and has been quilting for nearly 30 years, redrafted the traditional double wedding ring quilt pattern to include slightly diamond-shaped intersections. This double wedding ring pattern is suitable for expert quilters, since it incorporates the techniques of curved, foundation piecing and set-in or “Y” seams. If you’d like to practice your technique before cutting fabric for an entire quilt, try making a mini wall hanging with just four interlocking units. Check out her blog post on Laurel’s Studio where she shares more about this quilt, which took about eight years to finish!

Rings Paper-Pieced Block Pattern

If foundation piecing is a technique you feel comfortable with, you might like this version of a double wedding ring quilt pattern. With triangles pieced inside the rings, the Rings Paper Pieced Block Pattern works great for showing off two contrasting fabrics. The rings yield a 17″ block; however, the pattern can be sized smaller or larger depending on your desired quilt size.

How about a modern spin on the double wedding ring quilt pattern? The Polka Dot Bikini pattern features the design’s signature interlocking rings, but the focus is on the bright-colored background fabrics. In addition, the rings are thinner and feature just one fabric instead of being pieced. A border of brightly colored patchwork squares frames the jewel-toned quilt.

As you can see, there are many double wedding ring quilt patterns and variations, ranging from beginner-friendly to advanced, and traditional to more modern in appearance. If you decide to make one of these quilts, be sure to show us your progress by adding a project to the Craftsy member gallery!
