Enhance With Eyelet: Inspiration Tips for How to Sew Eyelet

Eyelet fabrics and trims are always popular in fashion and home decor projects, providing a quick and simple way of adding texture, visual interest and femininity to the simplest or most complex of sewing projects. When you know how to sew eyelet, you can use it for your entire project or just add a little of it for detail. Need some inspiration?

Here’s a roundup of fun and interesting ways to incorporate eyelet fabrics or trims into your wardrobe or home decor.

Tip #1: When making a dress or a tunic length top, consider piecing the back panel of the garment with eyelet fabric.

I recently sewed my daughter a simple A-line dress but only bought enough of the zebra cotton print to cut out the front and approximately 2/3 of the back of the dress. By piecing the top back portion of the dress with ecru eyelet fabric, I was able to add an unexpected element to the back of her dress. The holes in the eyelet fabric also allow this dress to breathe, which makes it perfect for keeping cool on a hot summer day!

Tip #2: Construct the sleeves of a top or t-shirt out of eyelet fabric or trim.

As seen in this cowgirl top tutorial from Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop, the sleeves of a simple short-sleeved top can be cut from a piece of wide eyelet trim or fabric. Not only does this eliminate the need for hemming the sleeve, it also makes an otherwise basic top or t-shirt dressier and more girly.

Tip #3: Add eyelet trim to a slip hem.

Jen at iCandyHandmade shows you how to add eyelet trim to the bottom of a silky slip. She wears her slip under skirts that she likes but feels are too short to wear alone. The modest eyelet trimmed slip extender peeks out of the bottom of her skirt providing a few extra inches of coverage.

Tip #4: Use eyelet trim in lieu of sewing fabric ruffles.

Sometimes gathering small ruffles to add to garment plackets or near hem lines can be daunting and laborious. To skip all the work of gathering, simply use a piece of pre-gathered eyelet trim instead. Eyelet trims come in a wide variety of widths, styles and colors, adding another visual design element to your garment.

Here’s an example of a button-up blouse I made my daughter where I used a narrow white eyelet trim along the placket instead of sewing my own ruffles.

Tip #5: Sew valances using an eyelet border fabric.

Save time and hemming by using an eyelet fabric with a decorative border to sew valance curtains like Craftsy member Ellie Rue did here.

Tip #6: Use knit eyelet fabric for stylish and comfy sleepwear.

Craftsy member Anuca used rayon eyelet knit fabric and the Craftsy class Sewing Fashion Knits: Beyond the Basics to create her first successful knit garment! The eyelet knit fabric is super soft with a delicate touch that makes it the perfect choice for this lovely nightgown or perhaps a comfortable sleep shirt or pajama pants.

Tip #7: Add an eyelet pocket to a simple t-shirt.

Give a basic otherwise boring t-shirt a quick makeover by adding a simple eyelet breast pocket. Make the pocket pop even more by lining it with a colorful scrap of fabric.

Tip #8: Create feminine, frilly baby bedding with eyelet fabrics and accents.

Eyelet fabrics and trims are the perfect accent for a traditional and classic decor to a baby girl’s nursery. Incorporate eyelet ruffles to valances, seat cushions, pillows, decorative bedding and more using the Craftsy class Sew Little: Nursery Design as a guide.

Tip #9: Sew a fun, flirty eyelet sundress.

Eyelet fabric dresses never go out of style! Pick a colorful eyelet and sew together a twirly sundress like Craftsy member Ori did using the Athena Dress Pattern from Wild Lily and Lace.
