Cozy Oversized Cardigan Knitting Patterns for Fall

It’s finally fall — the knitter’s dream season! The crisp air, the changing leaves, the wooly sweaters on our needles. This season, move over fitted sweaters, the oversized cardigan is trendy in a BIG way! Slouchy, warm and comfy, these sweaters are pretty much the equivalent of wearing a (very stylish) blanket this cold season. In simple stockinette or rocking cables, there’s an oversized cardigan knitting pattern for everyone.

Here are a few knitting patterns for oversized cardigans.

Cozy cocoon

Throw it on and go! A cocoon sweater is generally worked as an oversized rectangle, with part of the body becoming the upper sleeve. This super cozy cardigan from Oregon’s Imperial Stock Ranch incorporates several lovely textured stitch patterns and is long enough to cover your assets. The sweater begins with a provisional cast on and is worked from front to back for minimal seaming. Cocoon sweaters don’t generally have buttons or closures, but a shawl pin or stick is great for keeping it closed in front. Alternatively, a wide belt would keep everything in place and create a great shapely look.

Simple stockinette

A lighter option for those in warmer climates! This beautifully drapey cardigan can be worked in fingering weight or lace weight yarns, and features fun hem shaping and a nice deep V-neck. The body is worked seamlessly from the bottom up, then the sleeves are picked up and worked top down, allowing you to customize the lengths as you go. Bella Vita is meant to be worn with a whopping 18-20″ of ease – the smallest finished size is 50″! I think it would look great with a little less ease as well for a different silhouette.

Giant Cables

This awesome giant cabled cardigan is worked in one piece from the top down in super bulky yarn in garter stitch. Fast and warm, this cardigan is a great alternative to a jacket for those not-quite-parka-weather days. Cabled sweaters use up yarn quickly, so make sure you’ve stocked up on enough yardage. Refined tunic

This flattering tunic cardigan is more of a long and lean look. The “Picea” pattern features refined details such as the knit in hem and subtly striped sleeves. The body is long and oversized but is offset by the slim sleeves. This cardigan would be perfect over a tee and leggings or slim jeans for a great fall uniform. Plus, who can resist those pockets?
