Truth: you can’t serve Santa’s cookies on just any old place mat. Luckily, you can quilt this fun design in an afternoon! And with the easy-peasy fusible applique lights, even the kids can get involved in designing.
Christmas Lights Place Mat

What You Need
- Light template
- 48″ black cording or yarn
- 11″ x 14″ background fabric (we used gray)
- Five 3″ squares of bright fabric (we used red, blue, green, orange and yellow)
- 5″ square of patterned fabric (for the light’s base)
- Fusible product with paper back, such as Wonder Under
- 11″ x 14″ backing and batting
- Fabric for binding
- Fabric marker
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Pins
- Thread
Instructions
1. Make the Lights
Fuse the wrong side of the five 3″ squares of bright fabric and the 5″ square of patterned fabric to the fusible product. Using a fabric marker, trace the light bulb template onto the 3″ fabric squares. You should be able to trace 3-4 bulbs on each square. Cut out the shapes.
Trace the base template onto the patterned fabric and cut out each.
2. Sew the Light String
Arrange the yarn or cording on the background fabric, pinning it in place and leaving plenty of space for the bases and bulbs. Sew a zigzag stitch on top of the string with matching thread.
Pro Tip: Don’t worry if any puckers occur when you stitch — this will come out during quilting.
3. Add the Lights
Place the patterned bases around the yarn, then add the lights to the bases, tucking them under slightly. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for fusing, and fuse the light bulbs in place.
4. Quilt
Make a quilt sandwich with your quilt top, backing and binding, then quilt the place mat together. Trim, bind and it’s ready for those Christmas cookies!
