Stitch Your Heart Out with This DIY Tee

If you've got two tees and a pair of scissors, you're less than an hour away from this adorable shirt. This hand-stitched cutie is great for kids (especially 'cause they can totally help make it). But you might just want one for yourself, too.

DIY Heart Cut-Out Shirt

We <3 this shirt! Here’s how to make your own:

What you need:

  • Two T-shirts
  • Scissors
  • Chalk

1. Remove the hem

Start with your two T-shirts. Determine which shirt you want to act as the stitches, and snip along the bottom hem. Cut through both the front and back of the shirt so the hem is completely cut off.

2. Trim along the edge

Once the hem is tossed aside, trim along the bottom of the shirt to make a thin strip of cloth. Unlike when you removed the hem, make sure you’re now only cutting one side of the shirt’s fabric. Keep trimming around the edge until you have one long, slender length of fabric; then snip it from (what remains of) the T-shirt.

3. Draw the heart and cut the holes

Use chalk to draw your heart, then mark every inch around the shape with a little line or dot. Use your scissors to make a small cut at each inch marker.

4. Get to stitchin’

Time to practice your stitching skills! Take the strip of fabric cut from your first shirt and begin weaving it in and out of the holes, starting at the bottom "point" of the heart. Make sure your first stitch comes up from the inside of the shirt.

5. Tie it together

To finish your stitches, bring your fabric back down through the same hole your first stitch came up. Then simply tie the ends together with a knot and trim off any excess fabric.
