Knitting Hats for Toddlers is No Small Feat!

Knit Hats for Tots

Unlike knitting socks for toddlers, which are some small feet, knitting hats for kids is rewarding and frustrating at the same time. Rewarding as they are usually faster and done pretty quickly, but frustrating to see your lovely 3 year-old rip off that super cute owl hat and toss it aside, to go back to putting undies on his head. Or is that just my kid?

Toddler hats have come a long way over recent years. From basic patterns to intricate and elaborate motifs, hand knit hats are becoming all the rage for the little guys and gals. We took a look at animal crochet hats for kids a few weeks ago, and some of you asked how to make them. So here we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite toddler hat patterns on Craftsy!

Toddler Striped HatGoing back to basics, this Striped hat by petalknits is simple, yet oh so cute. You can knit the bulk of the hat on small circular needles, but will have to switch to double pointed needles to finish off the long dramatic tail. Make this hat in red and green for the holidays, or orange and black for Halloween. It would look adorable in red, white and blue for the Fourth of July as well!

Mod Circle HatTot Toppers has a Mod Circles hat that is sure to please. Intarsia knitting may seem ambitious for the amateur knitter but I assure you, as long as you remember to wrap those stitches, it’s a breeze and looks so chic! This would make an excellent birthday gift for the hard-to-buy-for kids.

Hoot Toque Owl HatAnimals on small children’s head are all the rage and nothing is hotter right now than Owls! Knit this fowl friend for your child and learn the trick of appliqué and knitting in the round. The Hoot Toque by thewittyknitter is a quick pattern done in chunky yarn and knit seamlessly from the top down. This hat is a hoot!

Flower Fairy HatWhat is more precious than combining a little girl with fairies and flowers?! The Flower Fairy hat by Craftsy member ewe ewe is to die for. Designed by Annika Barranti, this hat is modeled after a bluebell flower. Knit from the top down to create the perfect flared edge. This pattern comes in a variety of sizes from infant to an older child.

Little Monster HatAnd let’s not leave the boys out! The Little Monster hat by ohdessaknits is sure to bring a smile to your son’s face. This hat has a ton of features, seamless circular knitting, garter stitch, pointy ears, earflaps, short rows and much more! A great hat to learn new techniques or brush up on the ones you haven’t used in a while. Don’t be scared by this intermediate monster!

These are just a few of the toddler hat knitting patterns we have here on Craftsy. Which hat will you make next?
