Double the Fun With These 6 Two-Color Quilts

Sometimes the simplest quilt designs get passed over in favor of more intricate, more colorful options. This is sad, but also really silly! Two-color quilts don’t get nearly enough love.

Two-color quilts have so many benefits — for example, they’re often very graphic and bold, since they only have two high-contrast fabrics. And instead of worrying print scale, volume, tone and other elements of many fabrics (not to mention all cutting time), you can focus on your piecing skills.

These two-color quilts prove that just a pair of fabrics can be anything but boring!

1. Sunshine Tiles Quilt

With white and bright yellow solids, this quilt can’t do anything but stand out! Two alternating block designs make interesting primary and secondary patterns, inspired by vintage floor tiles. Five sizes from crib to king make it the perfect two-color quilt for any occasion or space.

2. Scattered Showers Quilt

On the opposite side of the structured-layout spectrum, this is one quilt where even little bits of the second color can have a huge effect. Rather than a traditional pattern, this quilt guides you through the improv piecing process for a modern spin on quilting.

3. Modern Love Quilt

Inspired by frequency waves, this quilt represents how the word “love” looks when spoken. What a great idea — and it comes from our 2016 Quilt Designer Fellowship winner! This version uses two different reds to add dimension on the white background, but it could just as easily be constructed in one contrasting solid. Available in three sizes from wall to queen, it shows how exciting minimalist design can be.

4. Snowflake Tree Skirt

I love this two-color tree skirt! It’s a retro, mod version of a snowflake, and the unexpected gray background makes the white pop. A great skill builder for machine appliqué, the tree skirt measures 48″ when it’s all finished and bound.

5. Lone Star Baby Quilt

A fresh take on the classic Lone Star quilt block, this complicated-looking project is actually made with squares, rectangles and half-square triangles! Plus, the pattern includes a tip for making eight half-square triangles at a time. Measures 40″ square, the perfect size for snuggling.

6. Plus Plus Quilt

There’s no downside to this two-color quilt! (Well, OK, actually two and a half with that awesome optional accent color.) The Plus Plus Quilt is available in two versions: the two-tone version using yardage and offering lots of practice for string piecing, and another using ¼-yard cuts and Fat Quarters. Make it in three sizes: baby, lap or queen.
