What Your Houseplants Say About You

That green thumb of yours says a whole lot more than just "I'm good with plants." The potted companions you pick can actually hold the secrets to your personality, revealing whether you're a carefree spirit or more of a private type. Find your favorite greenery below and see what the leaves have to say about you.

Bromeliad

Tough plants with a big personality, these relatives of the pineapple last longer than most flowering plants and are known for their tolerance of a wide range of temperatures.

Depending on the season, bromeliads only need to be watered monthly or bimonthly. They like bright light, but no direct hot sun. And as epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants and not in soil), they should be planted in a shallow pot with either orchid mix, a blend of bark, moss, or other organic matter where the roots won’t sit in water and rot.

What it says about you: You're flexible and calm, but stand out with your unique personality. You don't need a lot of attention, but you enjoy being recognized for your beauty and charisma.

Succulents

Succulents give off a tough-guy vibe with their waxy surfaces and cactus spines. But don’t be fooled: these plants are way more easygoing than they let on, and they're super flexible — you'll find them in an array of colors, shapes, sizes and textures.

To care for succulents, give them plenty of light and employ the soak-and-dry method: water them so their roots are soaked, then let them dry completely before watering again.

What it says about you: You're edgy, independent and sometimes a little prickly. You like to travel and don’t have to worry about your #plantladyvibes dying while you’re off seeing the world.

Spider Plant

Spider plants grow into their space quickly and are delightfully adaptable to different temperatures and environments. These beauties thrive in moderate, indirect sunlight and average humidity. Water 'em occasionally and don’t let the soil dry out in between.

What it says about you: You're sociable, easygoing and super low-maintenance. You thrive in a room full of people and can hang with just about anyone.

Dracaena

These hard-to-kill houseplants actually pull double-duty to help purify our air. They like low light, either filtered indoor light or a semi-shaded spot. Water them — but not too much — only when the soil is dry on top, misting the leaves and soil with purified water. Dracaena are very sensitive to the fluoride commonly found in tap water — it'll turn the plant brown and yellow, eventually killing it.

What it says about you: You live a simple life and enjoy the basic pleasures of this world. You don’t need much, and friends look to you for rational advice and a fresh outlook.

Air Plant

A plant that doesn’t need soil opens a whole new world for decorating and design. Treat these plants to bright, filtered air and a little bit of moisture, either through misting or occasional soaking.

What it says about you: You're free-spirited and don’t stay in one place for very long. Some might say your head is in the clouds, but you’re just going with the flow.

Orchids

A graceful, exotic and elegant addition to any room, orchids should be planted in shallow soil. They prefer bright-but-indirect light, thriving in humid conditions. They also need regular fertilizing, and can easily be watered with a few ice cubes.

What it says about you: You're patient and intuitive. The people around you really appreciate your ability to listen and your grace in social situations.

Weeping Fig

Weeping figs keep their tree shape regardless of their size, and they let you know when they’re stressed by dropping their leaves. So treat your figs right with indirect or filtered light, and avoid low temperatures by keeping them in rooms that stay above 60 degrees F.

What it says about you: You're shamelessly you, and never change based on what others think. You wear your emotions on your sleeve — if you feel happy, sad or angry, everybody knows it.

Snake Plant

Striking and easy to care for, snake plants naturally detoxify the air and are commonly used in Feng Shui to fill rooms with positive energy. They're prone to rot though, so they need free-draining soil and should only be watered when the soil is completely dry. While they can put up with a variety of light conditions, they're happiest in indirect light.

What it says about you: You’re an introvert at heart — the less attention people give you, the better. But anyone who knows you well knows how creative and strong you really are.
