What's Next in Cake: Our 2019 Predictions

If we had to sum up 2018 wedding season in one word, it would probably be "glam." Cake designers raked in the orders for elegant marbled tiers, sparkling geode features and TONS of metallic. But as the year draws to a close (where did it go??), it’s time to look ahead.

For 2019, brides-and-grooms-to-be are moving away from obvious glam, opting instead for more subtle use of luxe elements teamed with carefree, even playful design ideas.


Geometric patterns and textures have dominated home furnishings for a while now, and this trend has definitely made the move into weddings. If you’re hoping to recreate this style, we recommend adding metallics as the finishing touch — instant chic!

For the geometric cake above, we played with hard and soft features. The navy bottom tier carries striking gold geometric patterns, and makes a great contrast with the shimmering white sequined tier above. (Yep, they're edible!). Finally, we loaded it up with blush pink open peonies, eucalyptus, white damson blossoms and fondant blueberries (all in sugar form, of course).

A few other motifs that look amazing with geo patterns include soft and luxurious fondant ruffles, sugar pearl beading, or wafer paper flowers.


While last year was all about texture (remember rocky geodes and rough cement effects?), today we're seeing the pendulum swing in a painterly direction. Botanical-style paintwork and whimsical illustrative effects are top-of-mind for couples.

Case in point: the four-tiered design above, featuring blush roses and soft ranunculus blooms rendered in illustrative style. Golden accents and fresh greenery complement the sweet florals. For a special touch, we created a focal point with romantic text.


More and more of our couples are focusing their wedding flowers and decorations on greenery and foliage. Think: striking fern leaves, eucalyptus sprigs and even fragrant herbs.

For the pretty semi-naked wedding cake above, the couple requested soft pink florals and macarons surrounded by lots of foliage. We arranged the larger focal flowers first before adding in beautiful ferns, large salal leaves and rosemary sprigs to give the cake a fantastic, wild look.

Pro tip: herbs make such an interesting addition to a semi-naked or buttercream cake — especially when you grow them yourself. We keep a garden with rosemary, curled parsley, basil and dill. (Just stay away from pesticides to keep everything safe to eat!)

Gold hoops

We love the ever-changing hoop trend! We first saw them in the form of pretty modern wreaths adorning fondant tiers, which soon evolved to foliage-laden hoops at receptions. This days, the look is simple and streamlined, yet still luxe thanks to the gold finish.

For our take on the gold hoop trend, we selected a modern color palette of blush, dove gray, greens and pops of deeper pinks. We opted for a less traditional gray three-tier with a simple arrangement of a cottage-style roses, larger sugar raspberries and foliage. Golden bees and hexagon shapes brought a little whimsy.


Rustic-styled weddings have been huge for a couple of years, but we predict a more style and fashion-driven twist for 2019. Think macramé features, dreamcatchers and fabric textures galore.

We collaborated on a recent showcase that incorporated some of these fabulous on-trend ideas. We started with a pretty base of blush bink with golden streaks, then hand-crafted a modern take on the dreamcatcher with glittering beads, feathers and metallic ribbon and lace.
