3 Fun Cake Toppers You Can DIY in a Flash

Sure, you can buy perfectly good cake toppers at the store, but don’t you want your cakes to have a more personal touch? These cake toppers are cute, handmade and as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Heart Cake Topper

Level: Easy

What You Need

  • Wire
  • Dowel
  • Pilers
  • Hot glue gun
  • Thyme
  • String lights
  • 1. Shape the Heart

Shape your wire into a heart and twist the ends together with your pliers. Don’t get hung up on making your heart completely symmetrical — it’ll be cute no matter what. Once you’ve got your heart, use a hot glue gun to fasten the wire to your dowel.

    2. Add the Thyme and Wrap With Lights

Place your thyme along the wire of your heart. Wrap the string lights around the wire and thyme. This will easily secure the greenery to your wire, without sacrificing beauty. Take your thyme with this step! Once you have the wire wrapped with thyme and lights, just stick the dowel into the cake and tuck any remaining string and battery pack out of sight behind the dessert! This is a great topper for a wedding or anniversary cake for your S/O.

    Light Up Letter Topper

    Level: Easy

    What You Need

  • Small cardboard letter
  • Paint
  • X-ACTO knife
  • How glue gun
  • Dowels
  • Glue dots
  • Mini balloon lights
  • Instructions

    1. Cut Your Cardboard

With an X-ACTO knife, carefully cut off one side of your letter. This will be the front of your topper and house your lights. Make sure you cut the correct side — you don’t want to finish your project just to realize that your letter is backwards!

Once you have your letter hollowed-out, use the knife to cut holes for the dowels at the bottom of your letter. Secure your dowels with hot glue.

    2. Paint

Now it’s time to paint your letter! Choose any color you like, but it might be helpful to apply a coat of white first so the brown cardboard doesn’t dull your hue. Wait for the paint to dry before moving on to step three.

    3. Light it Up!

Once your letter is finally dry, we’re going to line the inside with mini balloon lights. Simply stick them into place with some glue dots and you’re done!

    Balloon Cake Toppers

    Level: Easy

    What You Need

  • Mini balloon lights
  • Balloons
  • Balloon pump
  • Dowels
  • Instructions

    1. Pump ‘Em Up

This is the easiest cake topper of them all! Just insert one mini balloon light into each balloon and give it a few pumps of air.

Be careful not to make the balloons too big — you want to be able to fit a couple toppers on your cake.

    2. Tie

Once you inflate your balloons, tie each one around a dowel.

Then just stick your toppers in the cake and turn the lights down low to see them illuminate!
