Give Your Granny Square Some Flower Power

We’re bringing a dose of flower power to the basic granny square. By changing up the center before breaking into the traditional square motif, you’ll make a granny, that’s fresh, fab, and floral.

What You Need

Pro Tip: You can use any yarn and hook to make these squares, just remember that the weight of your yarn and size of your hook will change the finished size of your square.

Cluster Stitch

A cluster stitch is made by crocheting incomplete stitches, then finishing them all off together. It can be worked into a stitch below, or a chain space (this is how we’ll do it in this pattern).

[Yarn over, insert hook into chain space, yarn over, draw through first 2 loops on hook] 3 times, yarn over, pull through all 4 loops on hook.

Instructions

Round 1

Chain 5 (this counts as your first double crochet and ch 1).

Dc in fifth ch from hook, [ch 1, dc in same st (fifth ch from hook)] 6 times, sl st into 3rd ch of first ch-5 to close round.

You should have 7 dc stitches in round 1, with ch-1 spaces separating each of them.

Round 2

Sl st in next chain space, ch 3, then work a cluster st in same chain space.

[Ch 3, dc in next chain space, cluster st in same ch space] 7 times, working in each of the remaining ch-1 spaces from Round 1.

Slip st to top of first ch 3 to close round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 3

Join new color of yarn in any ch-3 space from Round 2.

Working in that same space: ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc (first corner made), [(ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, (ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, sl st to top of first ch-3 to close round.

If you want to change colors on the fourth round, fasten off your yarn and join your new color. Otherwise, feel free to keep working with the same color for Round 4.

Round 4 and Beyond

From here on out, you’re working traditional granny square rounds. Round 4 (and any subsequent rounds) are the same as Round 3, except that you’ll need to work an additional ch 1, 3 dc between each corner.
