If you’re living that apartment life or are short on outdoor space, we have the best news: you don’t need a big plot of land to grow your vegetables. Instead, make your garden thrive vertically!
Though you can’t grow every type of veggie on this wall (TBH, tomatoes might be too heavy for this design), this clever setup makes a perfect home for lettuce, kale, cabbage, and herbs. It’s perfect for your balcony garden!
Vertical Veggie Garden
What You Need:
- Wooden pallet
- Landscape fabric
- Staple gun
- Plywood, the same size as the wooden pallet
- Screwdriver
- Screws
- Two 1″ x 4″ cuts of wood
- Exterior paint
- Paint brush
- Potting soil
- Box cutter
- Your favorite vegetables
Instructions
1. Staple the Landscape Fabric
Flip your wooden pallet over so the back faces up. Place the landscape fabric into the pallet and staple it against the inside of the front panels. Please make sure to include the sides as well to secure it.
2. Build the Box
Screw a piece of plywood to the back of the pallet. Then screw a 1″ x 4″ cut of wood to the bottom, as shown in the video.
3. Make It Pretty
Cover the wood with exterior paint. Let it dry completely.
4. Fill It With Soil
Turn the pallet vertically, and the open end faces up. Fill the space behind the landscape fabric with soil. Pack it tightly, then screw another 1″ x 4″ cut of wood to the top.
5. Prep for the Veggies
Using a box cutter, cut a small X in the landscape fabric where you want to plant a vegetable. Repeat this for each plant. Be sure to leave plenty of room between each X for the greens to grow!
6. Plant Your Garden
Plant your desired veggies and prop your pallet against a sunny wall!
Does any one know if you can grow other non leafy vegetables…like carrots, celery, tomatoes, peppers, peas, and beans etc using this method.

The video is missing. How can I see the video that explains all steps?
We need more instructions than shown. What is a pallet? What is it made of and how big is it? What is .landscape fabric? A video would be a big help.
It looks like there is supposed to be a video here but I don't see it. Is it possible to see if it somehow dropped off of the page? I would love to do this project. Thanks :-)
