3 Easy Ways to Make a Bunting Cake Topper

Actions

Sometimes it seems like there's not enough time in the world to decorate that last-minute party cake. These three quick-and-easy bunting cake topper ideas are perfect for when you need to fit a simple celebration cake for coworkers, friends or family into a busy schedule.

Cute traditional flag bunting cake topper

Create a more traditional topper with triangle-shaped pieces. Jazz them up by using patterned craft scissors to cut scalloped or zigzagged edges.

Materials and tools you'll need:

  • Long wooden skewers or unused kebab sticks
  • Thin ribbon, string or yarn
  • Patterned or colored card stock
  • Glue or double-sided tape
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Blade or scriber tool

Step 1:

First decide how large you'd like your bunting pieces to be (ours are 4 cm long and 2 cm wide at the top). Then draw a rhombus or diamond-shaped template using these measurements on the back of your card stock.

Step 2:

Using your blade or scriber tool, cut out the diamond shapes and lightly scour them straight across the center so that they fold over easily.

Step 3:

Tie some string around the tops of two wooden skewers. Snip off any frayed ends.

Add glue or double-sided tape to the inside of each bunting piece and attach them to your string. To do this, sit the bunting with the fold perched onto the string and carefully press both sides of the cardstock together until attached. Continue this process along the string until you're happy.

Step 4:

Insert the wooden skewers into the top of your cake. The top of the skewers should be angled away from each other.

What we love about this cake bunting topper is that there's enough room to add pre-cut or sticker letters for quick messages. You can even use glitter cardstock, custom prints or artwork you've painted yourself!

2. Easy washi tape cake bunting topper

This topper is perfect if you have  washi tape  laying around that matches your party's theme. It's also ridiculously quick and easy to make.

Materials and tools you'll need:

  • Long wooden skewers or unused kebab sticks
  • Thin ribbon, yarn or string
  • Patterned or colored washi tape
  • Scissors

Step 1:

Tie some string or yarn around the ends of two wooden skewers.

Step 2:

Cut a few 3"-long pieces of washi tape. Working one piece at a time, carefully fold the tape over the string so that it sticks to the other side. Then snip off the end of the tape. You can opt for a straight-across finish, slightly angled or a traditional ribbon V-shaped notch.

Step 3:

Insert the two wooden skewers on top of your cake, making sure that they're a few inches apart and angled away from each other.

3. Cake bunting topper with shapes

This topper is the easiest one to create — no cards or tape involved! Punch out your own custom-designed shapes or search your favorite craft store's paper aisle for pre-cut shapes.

Materials and tools you'll need:

  • Long wooden skewers or unused kebab sticks
  • Thin ribbon, string or yarn
  • Pre-cut card shapes (or create your own)
  • Glue or double-sided tape
  • Scissors

Step 1:

Tie some thin string, yarn or ribbon around the tops of two wooden skewers. Snip off any frayed ends.

Step 2:

Add a dab of glue or double-sided tape to the back of your pre-cut shapes (we used white glittery stars), and press them onto your string or ribbon.

Step 3:

Push the wooden skewers into the top of your cake, making sure that they sit a few inches opposite each other and are angled outwards.

Now you're ready to create a cake bunting topper for any occasion!  You can customize your toppers with custom shapes, and even mix and match styles for a more quirky aesthetic.
