Your extraordinary mom deserves a card that’s just as original as she is. Which is why you should make Mother’s Day pop with a 3D card you create yourself. It’s sure to put a smile on her face!

Pop-Out Mother’s Day Card

Level: Easy

What You Need

  • Two pieces of stiff scrapbook paper, one for the card and one for the pop-out design
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • X-ACTO knife or scissors
  • Ruler
  • Parchment paper
  • Instructions

    1. Cut Out the Card

Cut out two long rectangles (4″x10″ each) from one piece of scrapbook paper. One of these rectangles will form the interior of the card and support the popup design; the other will be glued to the card’s exterior at the end to give your card a smooth outside finish.

Fold each rectangle in half for a finished size of 4×5 inches, and set these papers aside for now.

    2. Draw Your Design

On your second piece of paper, draw your popout design. We did a cute flower we painted with watercolors for one card, and a simple “MOM” cutout for another. When you’re ready, cut out your popout design.

    3. Cut Strips in the Card

Now return to your folded rectangles. Open one of them back up and cut two parallel 1″ slits straight down the middle, creating a strip that remains attached to the card on both ends. You need one of these strips for any pop-out object on the card. So for the flower pop out, we cut one strip. (For the MOM card, we cut three.)

    4. Fold the Strip

Fold the strip the opposite way of the card — and be careful to not tear it! Gently fold it in so that when the card is fully folded, the strip is tucked completely inside.

    5. Glue Your Design

Open the card back up and use a glue stick to coat the strip of paper below the center crease. Estimate the placement of your popout, then fold the card back into closed position, pressing the strip to the back of your popout design.

Pro Tip: You can use a little trial and error here, so don’t stress about getting the placement perfect right away. The pop out designs are easy to move and reposition while the glue is still wet. Once you get it in the perfect spot, allow the glue to fully dry.

When you open the card, the design will pop right at you!

    6. Glue on the Back

Remember that second 4″x10″ strip of paper we cut at the beginning? Now’s the time to grab it. Open up the fold and cover the inside in a thin layer of glue. Then line it up and attach it to the back of the cut-out card. This hides the cuts you made from view and gives the outside of your card a professional, finished look.

Give the glue a little time to dry, and you’re done. Now all you have to do is write a sweet message and make Mom’s day!
