This month's scrappy block is a house in primary colors. Your little house can be sewn up in whichever color scraps you have handy.

Let's get started!

Collect and press scraps for the house, roof, door, window and background. The widest piece needed will be 2 1/2'' wide, so leftover strips or pre-cuts will work well.
Cut your scraps into the following sizes:
- Door fabric: cut one strip 1 1/2'' x 3 1/2''
- Window fabric: cut one square 2 1/2'' x 2 1/2''
- House fabric: cut three strips 1 1/2'' x 3 1/2'', one strip 1 1/2'' x 2 1/2'', one strip 1 1/2'' x 6 1/2''
- Roof fabric: cut two strips 1 1/2'' x 6 1/2''
- Background fabric: cut two squares 2 1/2'' x 2 1/2'', two strips 1 1/2'' x 6 1/2'', two strips 1 1/2'' x 6 1/2''
Arrange the fabrics as shown in the photo above to be sure the colors contrast and you like the combinations. All seams will be sewn with a 1/4'' seam allowance.
Begin by sewing the bottom row together. Sew the strip below the window and the window square together. Press the seams away from the window square. Then sew a house strip onto both sides of the door strip. Press the seams away from the door. Sew the door unit to the window unit. Then sew the house strip to the right side of the window unit. Press the seams away from the window square.
Sew the long house strip onto the top of the house unit. Press the seam toward the long strip. Also sew the roof strips together lengthwise and press the seams.
Layer the two 2 1/2'' background squares on either end of the roof unit. Draw a line diagonally from one corner to the other with a pencil as shown. Stitch on the drawn line and cut 1/4'' away from the stitched line. Discard the extra triangles and press the seams toward the background pieces.
The house unit and roof unit will now be sewn together. Press the seams toward the house unit.
Now that the house is sewn together, it's time to add the background strips.
Sew the two 1 1/2'' x 6 1/2'' strips to the sides of the house first. Press the seams toward the strips. Sew the two 1 1/2'' x 8 1/2'' strips to the top and bottom of the block. Press the seams toward the strips. The house block will now measure 8 1/2'' square.
