Would you like to make a fun, strip-pieced scrappy heart block for Valentine's Day? Here's a simple 8½" quilt block tutorial that will sew up in a snap!
How to sew a strip-pieced heart quilt block
- Six 1½" x 6½" strips of red or pink heart fabric
- Four 1½" squares of background fabric
- Two 3½" squares of background fabric
- Two 1½" x 6½" strips of background fabric
- Two 1½" 8½" strips of background fabric
Sew the red or pink heart strips lengthwise into two sets of three.
Lay the background squares on top of the strip sets, right sides together. The smaller squares should be on the top of the heart strip units, while the larger square should be on thh bottom. Using a ruler and pencil, mark the back of the squares with a diagonal line.
Sew on the marked lines. Press the background pieces away from the center of the heart as shown. Trim away the excess.
Sew the two sides of the heart together to form a heart.
Add the 6½" strips on the top and bottom of the heart unit. Then add the 8½" strips on the right and the left. The block will measure 8½".
Press the block.
How many color combinations can you make? Or maybe you could to reverse the red and white? Or have rainbow hearts? Or candy heart colors? Batik hearts on a black background, or country hearts on a tan background? Make this heart block your own!
Have a very happy Valentine's Day!
