These Polymer Clay Earrings Are a Blast to Make

There are so many reasons to adore polymer clay jewelry. For one, the medium couldn’t be easier to work with — think of it as Play-Doh for adults. For another, the pieces are totally customizable. Use whatever colors you want, mold any design you want and sculpt any shape you want. The tutorial below walks you through how to make marbled earrings with dangly accents — follow along, then go wild on your own.

Polymer Clay Earrings

Level: Easy

What You Need

  • Polymer clay in the colors of your choice (we used light pink, hot pink and black)
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Knife or scissors
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Wire cutter
  • Earring wire
  • Eye pins
  • Instructions

    1. Prep

Cover a baking sheet in parchment paper and preheat the oven to 275 F. Choose two to four colors of polymer clay and cut them into small chunks.

    2. Form the Main Piece

Grab a few of these pieces and roll them together until you’ve made a thick block that looks marbled.

Pro Tip: For best results, use different amounts of each color. Maybe a little more hot pink, a little less black, etc.

Cut the clay in half with a small knife. If needed, roll the clay out a bit and use your fingers to give the earrings your desired shape.

    3. Insert Eye Pins

Press one eye pin into the top of the earring piece. Turn it over and insert three more into the bottom.

Repeat this step for the second earring and set aside.

    4. Shape Teardrops

Roll out six skinny teardrop shapes — three for each marbled piece. Stick an eye pin into the top of each one.

    5. Roll Black Cylinders

Roll a thick cylinder in black polymer clay. Cut the cylinder in half with your X-ACTO knife and insert an eye pin horizontally through the center of each. (Note: the end of the pin will stick through.)

    6. Bake

Bake for 10-15 minutes until hardened.

Pro Tip: If your earrings are thicker, you may have to bake longer. As a general rule, allot 15 minutes for every ¼” of thickness.

    7. Put It Together

Use needle nose pliers to open the three eye pins on the bottom of each marbled piece, then insert the pink teardrop pieces. Pinch the eye pieces with the pliers to close them back up. Set aside.

Use your needle nose pliers to twist the bottom of the eye pins on the black cylinders into a loop.

Hook the eye pin on top of the marbled piece onto this DIY loop. Pinch it closed with pliers.

    8. Finish With Earring Wire

Thread an earring wire through each of the eye pins on the top of the black cylinders. Pinch it closed with your needle nosed pliers.

With that, you’ve got a new accessory to rock. And the coolest thing about polymer clay earrings is you can DIY them again and again in a ton of different variations.

Soon you’ll never have to buy earrings again.
