• Mattress stitch is our go-to for vertical seams — it's invisible, and works kind of like a magic zipper. Just thread your needle through each edge, then tighten up your thread and watch that seam disappear.

    1. 1. Line up the pieces you're planning to seam side by side, with right sides facing you.

    2. 2. Run a threaded tapestry needle through the first piece (the piece on your left). Start at the bottom right corner, and bring the needle between the outermost two knit stitches, running your needle under the horizontal bar between the two stitches.

    3. 3. Find the same place on the opposite piece, and pull your needle under the horizontal bar between those stitches.

    4. 4. Move your needle back to the piece on the left. Bring your needle under the next bar.

    5. 5. Move your needle back to the piece on the right. Bring your needle under the next bar.

    6. 6. Continue working back and forth in the manner, picking up the horizontal bars on each side.

    7. 7. Once you have a few inches seamed, gently tug on both ends of your yarn. The seam will zip up and disappear.

      Pro Tip

      • Once you've zipped, give your seam a tug to keep it from being too tight.

    8. 8. Keep working until you've finished seaming your edge.
