Between selecting a pattern and sorting through the dozens of rulers and other tools available, learning to quilt can be intimidating. Ashley will show you which tools you need to get started and walk you through everything you need to learn to quilt.
Buying fabric can be one of the best parts of quilting. Learn what kind of fabric to buy and why. Ashley will also show you several ways you can purchase different fabric lengths, including straight off the bolt and several pre-cut options.
When it comes to quilting, a rotary cutter is much faster and easier than scissors. Learn how to use one properly. Ashley will give you tips on how to hold your ruler and use the rotary cutter so you get clean cuts every time.
Piecing is how you put a quilt top together. Ashley will teach you how to align your fabric, set up the seam allowance and stitch your pieces together. You will also learn tips for saving time when you have a lot of blocks to piece.
Pressing is an important part of quilting. Ashley will show you how to set and press your seams correctly. You will also learn how pressing your seams in certain directions can make assembling a block easier and even eliminate the need for pins.
Practice makes perfect! Learn four different beginner blocks. Ashley will walk you through each block and show you how to make it. You will also learn how changing the color or arrangement of a block can create a whole new look.
A quilt can’t be complete without batting and backing fabric. Learn about the different types and sizes of batting available. Ashley will also show you what size backing fabric is required and explain why different layers are different sizes.
Quilting can be subtle or it can be the star of a piece. Learn several different quilting techniques. Ashley shows you how to layer the quilt top, batting and backing fabric and how to hold the layers together. You will then learn several ways to quilt, including using quilting templates and stitch-in-the-ditch quilting.
Binding is the final step in completing a quilt. Learn how to make you own binding and stitch it in place. Ashley will show you how to create mitered corners and how to nicely finish the binding.
